Hands on Creativity

What are Plaza Art's “Hands on Creativity” Events?

“Hands on Creativity” is a much-anticipated annual event that takes place at several of our stores. During “Hands on Creativity” weekends, Plaza Artist Materials customers can participate in free art demonstrations, talk to artist representatives from major art brands, and pick up free samples of new art products.

If you are interested in trying new mediums, this is a great opportunity to “try before you buy” and talk to professional artists who are experts in various mediums. We also highlight art products that are new to the market and offer free literature and product samples.

Each of our stores periodically holds free demos that highlight one or two products or mediums at a time, but Hands on Creativity is unique because you can drop by the store, try dozens of products in an hour, learn new techniques for your favorite mediums, and walk away with several excellent samples and “make-and-take” mini projects. The Plaza Art in Nashville holds our biggest HOC event and we even offer full-length workshops for free during Nashville’s Hands on Creativity (but call the store to pre-register, those workshops fill up quickly!)

What is Artomatic?

setting up for Artomatic

Artists and volunteers have been busy installing artwork over the past two weeks at 8100 Corporate Drive in Hyattsville, Maryland for the legendary "Artomatic." If you live in the DC metropolitan area, you should definitely check out this nonprofit arts event over the next month! It is a great source of inspiration, no matter which medium you work with.

Artomatic is one of the largest non-juried art events in the United States. It was first held in 1999, inside the old Manhattan Laundry building on Florida Avenue in the Shaw neighborhood of Northwest Washington, DC—hence the original name “Art-O-Matic.” Since then, the event has been held periodically over the years at various locations around the DC-Maryland-Virginia area. When Artomatic is not in session, associated artists and organizers continue networking events on social media.

Artomatic tends to be hosted in transitory spaces—former office buildings that have been vacated by government workers before a demolition, or unfinished luxury high rises that have not yet begun leasing. The largest Artomatic was its most recent, occurring in an office building at 1851 S. Bell Street in Arlington, VA. Over ten floors of office space hos...

Hands On Creativity: Recap

Nov 17, 2015 10:49:11 AM

We want to thank everyone who participated in all of our Hands On Creativity events this year. We held the event at our stores in Towson, Rockville, Cincinnati, Nashville and Philadelphia. None of these events would have been possible without our customers, art vendors and outstanding demonstrators. You can read more about Hands On Creativity in our previous blog post.

We look forward to next year's HOC events, and encourage you to check out our store pages in the meantime for upcoming demos and workshops.

Plaza Art in Nashville had an incredible set-up and turnout at this year's Hands On Creativity. Approximately 700 customers participated in HOC on the 10th and 11th of October. There were 50 demonstrators—many were travelling artist-representatives from major art brands, and over half were local instructors or art groups!

Please enjoy this video from Hands On Creativity and don’t forget to sign up for our emails so you can stay in the know about upcoming demos, deals and other special news. And thank you again for being a supporter of Plaza Art.
