Dedicated to creating high quality paints and mediums for the fine arts community, Sam Golden mixed his first acrylic at the request of a local New York City artist in the 1950’s. He went on to evolve the definition of acrylic paint by creating the Heavy Body, Fluid, and High Flow acrylic colors offered today which are known for their intensity of color and pure ingredients. Golden also offers more than just color with products designed to impact texture, dimension, and working properties with their lines of Gesso, Gel, Paste, and Mediums. The Heavy Body palette includes the largest assortment of unique pure pigments in a 100% acrylic emulsion known for their exceptionally smooth, buttery consistency.
OPEN Acrylics are a slow-drying paint with a slightly softer consistency than the Heavy Body paints. The increased working time of these colors expands their range to include more traditional techniques once only possible with oils.
Signature flowing characteristic useful for dry brush application, fine details, pouring, spraying (particularly when mixed with GOLDEN Airbrush Medium), staining techniques and many others.
High Flow is Golden's newest acrylic paint that can go from brush to marker or from dip pen to airbrush and more. From fine lines to broad strokes, High Flow Acrylic has an ink-like consistency that lends itself to a wide range of techniques, including staining, leveling, calligraphy, and mixed media. High Flow offers increased durability of dry paint and a larger palette of colors including Iridescent and Fluorescent colors.
Mediums offer many ways to build texture. There are 5 consistencies from the most viscous Extra Heavy Gel to Soft Gel. Mediums are available in Gloss, Semi-Gloss and Matte finishes and in the following categories:
Gesso & Grounds
Gesso is designed to provide a surface to which paint can adhere. Gesso increases the life span of artwork. Golden Gesso is formulated to be flexible and is highly pigmented for greater opacity.
Grounds are used to prepare the surface media. Golden offers 3 types of Grounds for acrylics, pastel, and a drawing ground. These are permanent, lightfast, and flexible.
There are different styles of varnish that allow for different application and results. Pictured, the Polymer Varnish is a waterborne acrylic varnish that dries to a protective, flexible, dust resistant surface over acrylic paint. It is removable with ammonia, and available in Gloss, Satin and Matte. Other options include Mineral Spirit Acrylic (MSA) Archival Resin or Spray Varnish or protective coatings such as Gloss UV Topcoat or Isolation Coat.
